Someone threw these Dura Ace pedals away complaining that it didn’t work anymore while I was working at the shop and bought an new set. He tossed them...and then I claimed them. These are Shimano Dura Ace PD-9000 clipless pedals, which have been the top of the line clipless pedals for a long time. Story after the break.
I was working this night and then at the last few minutes before closing, someone came in and headed to the shop. He complained that he had “Chipped” the lip of the pedal and as result of this “chip”, the spring mechanism was out of tension, resulting in a “floaty” feeling when clipped in the pedals. He decided to buy a new pair. I even checked them out in front of him and asked where the chip was. He pointed at a specific location and I saw nothing. It was dirty, but not chipped. I said nothing as he tossed them and bought a new pair of Ultegra pedals. He explained he wanted be to be a bit more safe than sorry, as he had a Fred century event tomorrow.
After we closed, I claimed the pedals. I checked out the spring mechanism and saw there was something wrong. On the top of the pedal, there is a 2.5 mm or 2mm Allen head which adjusts the tension. The pedal he had complained about the floatiness was just the spring tension adjustment screw unscrewed to nearly no tension. That’s why you should learn about how your car/bike/whatever works. Or you can easily throw away a really expensive overbuilt pedal (this has 3 stages of bearings and my machinist dad called it a piece of precision engineering) that doesn’t have any issue whatsoever.
And if you don’t understand why these are called clipless pedals, these get their name from how people who wanted to “clip in” their pedals required toe clips and straps. Clipless pedals use a specialized platform where toe straps and toe clips were exchanged with a complicated spring loaded puzzle piece. Therefore “clipless".

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like cyclists throw a lot of perfectly good stuff away. My parents live in a town with no trash pickup, so my Dad was at the town dump one day and found that someone had thrown away a perfectly good Brooks Professional saddle (MSRP between $150 and $200). My dad rides lightweight, but I commute, so he gave me the saddle after sanding a little varnish off the rivets. It’s still on my bike to this day.

Awesome find, i’ve been in the market for some new pedals and hae been looking at these. Been looking at some of the Look pedals but might go with the Dura-Ace pedals. Currently on 105 pedals that have been through a few miles so i might replace them.

Dat one-77, doe.
Nice find! My dad has ridden nothing but clip less for as long as I can remember, but I’ve never been hard core enough to desire them. I just like the pedals with the jagged teeth that grip your shoe and tear all the skin off your shin if you’re not careful.

This is the equivalent of the guys who throw away their $400 of Taylormade driver because they keep slicing, and think bumping up to a $500 Titleist will change that. I saw that on average once a week working in a pro shop.
But in more relevant news I'm about to head to my local shop to hopefully buy a new mountain bike. I'm pretty stoked

This is sort of the reverse of my story - shop broke one of my (much cheaper) Shimanos on my mountain bike so for 6 years I’ve only been able to use one side of the left pedal. But I hate clipless and will switch back to flats once I find an affordable set that I like.

I ride the Ultegra version of these, they are bomb proof. Love them.

You lucky bastard. I’ve been on the ultegra version of these for about ten years, there is no substitute IMO. I destroy looks and speed play’s in less than a year. But those darn shimano’s just won’t do anything but work well.
I hope he replaced his cleats at the same time. 90% of the issues I see with folks is they went for a long walk on their cleats and expect them to work as new when they are totally rounded off.

Same here. If you come back from a day of riding without your shins bleeding have you even ridden?

I have clipless pedals on my mt bike but I LIKE them loose. Helps you get out of them when you need to (which is often done in a hurry).

Someone came in the shop with a 90s cannondale with what I remember to be Campy components. He had found it in the trash. No frame damage, a little dirty, and the only bad thing was someone painting over the frame in cheap shitty paint. I helped the guy clean and tune it up...it was marvelous

He did not replace his cleats, strangely enough. He must have cleat protectors for his Peets coffee rides

In one of the few cycling races I did, I felt like I was about to vomit during the mad Sprint up to the finish line. So I sprinted, got 6th, and then aimed my bike at the curb and jumped/unclipped into the bushes. Fun stuff, clipless

He seems more like the expresso or soy latte guy, as he was in his late 50s.

As long it’s the same mounts on the bottom (ie 3 hole or 2 hole) for both, it’s fine.
